With flights coming in from all mayor cities in the world, and an easy transportation system to navigate, there’s no excuse for you to skip Madrid. Si visitan a España por primera vez, Madrid, es una parada obligatoria en el itinerario. Una de las ciudades mas grandes de Europa, Madrid, es una ciudad llena de vida como ninguna otra. Con una cocina exquisita; actividades culturales para todos los gustos; una mezcla arquitectónica de diferentes periodos históricos; una ciudad abierta, donde las diferencias no son menospreciadas; y una capital mundial que se transforma cuando el sol se esconde, desde sus famosas ‘terrazas’ hasta bailar hasta no mas poder; Madrid es una ciudad para todos. Con vuelos directos desde las ciudades mas grande del mundo y un sistema de transporte publico fácil de navegar, no hay excusa para no parar por Madrid. 1. El Parque del Buen Retiro [Buen Retiro Park] 

One of the biggest parks in Madrid, it belonged to the Spanish monarchy until the 19th century. The park is a sportive, leisure, and cultural meeting point for locals and tourists. Be sure to stop by the Palacio de Cristal, a romantic glass pavilion, built in 1887 for an exhibition of exotic plants from the Philippines, it won’t disappoint you.

Uno de los parques mas grandes de Madrid, fue propiedad de la corona española hasta el siglo XIX. El parque es un punto de encuentro deportivo, de ocio, y cultural para turistas y locales. Asegúrense de hacer una parada por el Palacio de Cristal, un pabellón de vidrio romántico, construido en 1887 para una exhibición de plantas exóticas de la Filipina, no los decepcionará.

2. Museo Nacional del Prado [The Prado Museum]

One of the most renown museums in the world, it houses one of the finest collections of European art from the 12th century to the 20th century. Some of the most known artists you’ll find here are: Francisco de Goya, El Greco, and Diego Velasquez, among others. Since the museum is so big, my recommendation is to get a map of the museum; on the back of it you will find a list of the most famous paintings, go through the museum checking these off. Entry is free on Sundays and holidays, and Monday to Saturday from 5 – 8pm.

Uno de los museos mas conocidos del mundo, alberga una de las colecciones mas importantes de arte europeo del siglo XII al siglo XX. Algunos de los artistas mas conocidos que encontraran acá son: Francisco de Goya, El Greco, y Diego Velasquez, entre otros. Ya que el museo es tan grande, mi recomendación es coger un mapa en la entrada del museo; en la parte de atrás encontraran una lista de las pinturas mas celebres, hagan el recorrido buscando estas. La entrada es gratis los domingos y festivos, de lunes a sábado de 5 – 8pm.

3. El Palacio Real [The Royal Palace]

The official residence of the Royal Family of Spain, although the family doesn’t actually live here. Long before when the moors took over Spain, in its place was a moorish fortification constructed to defend Toledo. It was then used by the kings of Castilla, and later after a fire that destroyed the fortification, Felipe V, ordered for the actual palace to be built. The building was inspired by the sketches made by Bernini for the construction of the then Louvre Castle in Paris. The visit to the palace is free on low season (October to March) from Monday to Thursday, from 4 – 6pm.

La residencia oficial de la Familia Real, aunque la familia no vive aquí. Tiempo atrás cuando los moros habitaban España, en su lugar había una fortificación árabe construida para defender Toledo. Luego fue utilizada por los Reyes de Castilla, y después de un incendio el cual destruyo la fortificación, Felipe V, ordeno que el palacio actual fuera construido. El edificio estuvo inspirado por los bocetos de Bernini para la construcción del entones Castillo de Louvre en Paris. La visita al palacio es gratis en temporada baja (octubre – marzo) de lunes a jueves de 4 – 6pm.

4. Catedral de la Almudena [Almudena Cathedral] 

The cathedral of Madrid carries the name of the patroness of the city, Saint Mary of Almudena. After the capital of Spain was moved from Toledo to Madrid, the capital was left with no cathedral. Expanding the Spanish empire came first and the cathedral had to wait. It was finally completed in 1993 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II. Make sure to visit the chapel, it is completely covered in beautiful mosaics (pictures are not allowed inside). 

La catedral de madrid lleva al nombre de la patrona de la ciudad, Santa María de la Almudena. Después de que la catedral de España se mudo de Toledo a Madrid, la capital se quedo sin catedral. La expansión del imperio español era mas importante, y la catedral tendría que esperar. Finalmente en 1993 la construcción fue completada y consagrada por el Papa Juan Pablo II. Asegúrense de visitar la capilla, esta completamente cubierta por unos mosaicos espectaculares (las fotos no son permitidas adentro).

5. Mercado San Miguel [Market of San Miguel]

A tapas market located in the center of Madrid within minutes of Plaza Mayor. There are more than 30 stalls with a variety of tapas and drinks, there’s sure to be something for everyone. This is a must in your itinerary at any time of the day. Thursday to Saturday they are open from 10am – 2am, and all other days until 12am.

Un mercado de tapas en el centro de la ciudad de Madrid a solo minutos de Plaza Mayor. Hay mas de 30 puestos de comida con una variedad de tapas y bebidas exquisita, seguro encontraran algo para cada uno. Esta es un parada obligatoria en tu itinerario a cualquier hora del día. De jueves a sábado están abiertos de 10am – 2am, y el resto de los días hasta las 12am.

6. Plaza Mayor

An iconic central plaza in Madrid, the square was built during the reign of Phillip III. In the square you will find the main tourist office, and during Christmas time, one of Madrid’s biggest Christmas markets.

Una plaza central icónica en el centro de Madrid, la plaza fue construida durante el reinado de Felipe III. En la plaza podrás encontrar la oficina turística principal de la ciudad, y durante la Navidad, uno de los mercados de Navidad mas grandes de Madrid.

7. Monumento a Miguel de Cervantes [Monument to Miguel de Cervantes]

The monument commemorates the great Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes. Here we can see Cervantes sitting under a pedestal, and Don Quijote and Sancho Panza writing their famous horse and donkey respectively. The monument is situated on the Plaza de España, very close to the Royal Palace.

El monumento conmemora al gan escritor español Miguel de Cervantes. Acá podemos ver a Cervantes sentado bajo un pedestal, y Don Quijote y Sancho Pancho cabalgando sus famosos caballo y burro respectivamente. El monumento esta ubicado en la Plaza de España, muy cerca al Palacio Real.

8. Puerta del Sol [Gate of The Sun]

An emblema of the capital, La Puerta del Sol, is a main square where the point zero kilometers can be found, symbolically representing the city center. Here you can find: the statue of the bear and the strawberry tree, the coat of arms of Madrid; and the famous clock used for the traditional countdown to the new year and the eating of the 12 grapes.

Un emblema de la capital, La Puerta del Sol, es una plaza central donde se encuentra el punto cero kilómetros, representando simbólicamente el centro de la ciudad. Acá encontraras: la estatua del Oso y el Madroño, el cual representa las armas heráldicas de Madrid; y el famoso reloj de torre el cual anuncia la cuenta regresiva del año nuevo durante la tradicional toma de las 12 uvas.

9. Plaza de Cibeles [Cybele Plaza]

A landmark of Madrid, the plaza is the intersection of 3 of the main arteries of the city and it is surrounded by 4 prominent buildings, the Palace of Cybele, being the most significant of these, along with the Cybele fountain. If you’re staying around here, there’s a bus stop to the Barajas airport on this plaza.

Un punto de referencia de Madrid, la plaza es la intersección de 3 de las principales arterias de la ciudad y esta rodeada por 4 edificios prominentes, el Palacio de Cibeles, siendo uno de los mas importantes, junto con la fuente Cibeles. Si se están quedando cerca de aquí, hay una parada de bus al aeropuerto de Barajas en esta plaza.

10. Gran Via

One of the most significant streets in Madrid, Gran Via, is known for its shops, nightlife, and impressive architecture. There are also many hotels and hostels here, I recommend staying on an adjacent street or on Gran Via itself, as it is very central and close to everything.

Una de las calles mas significativas de Madrid, Gran Via, es conocida por sus almacenes, vida nocturna, e impresionante arquitectura. También hay muchos hoteles y hostales en esta calle y cerca, les recomiendo buscar uno en la Gran Via o por una calle adyacente a esta, ya que es muy central y todo queda cerca de aquí.
