In Pau we also have CARNAVAL [En Pau también hay CARNAVAL]

On a cold winter night, after a long exile in the region of Aragón in Spain, Sent Pançard and his court decided to go back to France by crossing the Pyrénées. After getting past the barricade built by the bourgeois who were waiting for them at the doors of the city of Pau, the capital of the Béarn, they were able to enter the city. There, his Majesty was welcomed by the mayor, and the keys of the city were handed to him. Sent Pançard is a king who represents all the sinful qualities of humans, and he arrives to Pau to encourage the people to enjoy without measure the days leading up to Lent. The joyous town-people will participate in a party (La hèsta), where the King will lead a show of musicians and dancers.

This is the legend of the Carnaval of Béarn. A carnaval that invites both natives from the region of Béarn and outsiders to enjoy a lively weekend in Pau. This year, the carnaval began on Thursday night with the hunt of the bears (Caça a l’ors), and ended on Saturday night with the cremation of the king Sent Pançard, although the celebration was extended until the early morning for some.

This carnaval is one of the 5 biggest in France, and it has been around for more than 30 years. These festivities are completely free, since the point is to save and keep the traditions of the region alive, while having a good time!

Una noche de invierno, después de haber estado en el exilio en la region de Aragón en España, el Rey Sent Pançard y su corte deciden regresar a Francia, cruzando los Pirineos. Después de pasar la barricada de burgueses que los esperaba en las puertas de la ciudad de Pau, la capital del Bearne, logran entrar a la ciudad. Allí su majestad es bienvenida por el alcalde, y se le entregan las llaves de la ciudad. Sent Pançard, es un Rey que representa todas las cualidades pecaminosas del ser humano y llega a Pau para animar al pueblo a disfrutar sin medida los días antes de la cuaresma. El pueblo feliz, participa de una fiesta (La hèsta), en donde el Rey lidera un espectáculo cómico de músicos y bailaores.

Esta es la leyenda principal del Carnaval Biarnés. Un carnaval que invita tanto a los oriundos de esta region como a los de afuera a disfrutar de un fin de semana animado. Este año el carnaval comenzó el jueves en la noche con la Caza de Osos (Caça a l’ors), y culmino el sábado en la noche con la cremación del Rey, aunque las celebraciones se extendieron hasta la madrugada para algunos. 

Este carnaval es uno de los 5 más grandes de Francia y se lleva celebrando mas de 30 años. Las festividades son totalmente gratuitas, ya que el propósito es salvar y mantener vivas esta tradiciones de la region y pasar un buen rato en familia.
