[Paseo en carro por la Costa Vasca]

Yes, we’ve all heard of the elegant Côte d’Azur in the south east of France and its crystalline waters.  But have you heard of the Basque coast in the southwest of France? Hilly landscapes with the Pyrenees on its backdrop, white houses with red and blue frames, and sandy beaches with deep blue water, that’s the Basque Coast. Nothing to envy to other beach destinations of Europe. So let’s take a Basque Coast road trip starting in the Spain and heading north to the France.

Claro, todos hemos escuchados de la elegante Costa Azul en el sudeste Frances con sus aguas cristalinas. ¿Pero han escuchado hablar sobre la Costa Vasca en el sudoeste de Francia? Un paisaje lleno de colinas con los Pirineos como fondo,  sus típicas casas blancas con marcos rojos y azules, y playas de arena con aguas de color azul profundo, esa es la Costa Vasca. Nada que envidiarle a otros destinos playeras de Europa. Así que tomemos un paseo en carro por la Costa Vasca empezando en España y siguiendo hacia al norte hasta Francia.  

1. Bilbao

We start our trip in Bilbao, the capital of the Spanish Basque Country. I won’t go into too much detail here, since I’ve written a post about Bilbao already. But ideally, you would arrive to Bilbao by plane from your point of origen and rent a car here to be able to move around the Basque Country. 

Empezamos nuestro paseo en Bilbao, la capital de País Vasco. No entraré en detalles sobre Bilbao ya que ya he escrito un articulo sobre esta bella ciudad. Pero lo ideal sería que lleguen a Bilbao en avión desde su punto de origen y alquilen un carro aquí para que se puedan movilizar mas fácilmente por toda la costa.

2. San Sebastián

A charming city like no other. Its beaches; delicious pintxos, typical plate from the Basque Country that consists of a piece of bread with ham, cheese, shrimp, or anything you can imagine held together by a toothpick; and its architecture. It is known for being a very chic city, dynamic, and with a very lively nightlife. There are two big beaches, the most known is La Concha, you must see the sunsets from here… they are some of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Take the train that leaves from the corner just in front of the bakery “Artigan” (and since you’re already there, taste one of their baked goods!) to take a trip around the city and learn about its history.

Una ciudad encantadora como ninguna otra. Sus playas; sus deliciosos pintxos, plato tipico del País Vasco que consiste de un pedazo de pan con jamón, queso, camarones, o cualquier cosa que te puedas imaginar sostenido por un palillo; y su arquitectura. Se conoce por ser una ciudad chic, dinamica, y con una vida nocturna animada. Hay dos playas grandes, la mas conocida es La Concha, les recomiendo ver el atardecer desde acá… son unos de los mas lindos que jamas he visto. Tomen el trensito que sale justo al frente de la pastelería “Artigan” (y por ahi derecho prueben un pastelito) para darle un recorrido a toda la ciudad y aprender sobre su historia. 

3. Hendaye

From San Sebastian, head up north to France. Not too long after passing the toll that defines the Spanish – French frontier you will find Hendaye. Hendaye is a cute coastal village, with its typical basque houses. The city (or the center) is not too big, so you might just want to visit for the day or spend the night if you feel like having a relaxed day by the beach. Head to the shops by the beach to rent paddle boards or surfing equipment.

Desde San Sebastián, suban hacia el norte hasta Francia. No mucho después de haber pasado el peaje que divide la frontera franco-española, encontrarán a Hendaye. Hendaye es una ciudad costera con casas típicas vascas. La ciudad (o el centro) no es muy grande, así que podrían visitarla solo durante el día, o pasar la noche si desean tener un día entero tranquilo cerca de la playa. Vayan a las tiendas al lado de la playa para alquilar planchas para hacer stand-up paddle o equipo de surf. 

4. St. Jean De Luz

Keep going North and you will get to the fisherman city of St. Jean De Luz, our next destination! St. Jean de Luz is a gem in the French Basque Country. Stay at a hotel close to the beach and enjoy walking around the old center: the cobblestone streets, white houses; stores selling fromage de la region and piments d’espellet (peppers from the Basque village of Espelette), and the famous béret basque and espadrilles, create a remarkable charm. Make sure to stop by the church of St. John the Baptist where the royal wedding between Louis XIV and the Spanish princess Maria Teresa took place in 1660.

Sigan hacia el norte y encontrarán la ciudad pesquera de St. Jean De Luz, ¡nuestro proximo destino! St. Jean De Luz es una joya en el Pais Vasco Frances. Quédense en un hotel cerca a la playa, y disfruten caminar por el casco viejo: las calles empedradas, casas blancas; almacenes vendiendo queso de la region y piments d’espellet (pimientos del pueblito vasco Espelette), las famosas bérets o boinas vascas y alpargatas, todo esto crea un encanto singular. Procuren pasar por la iglesia de San Juan el Bautista donde tomo lugar la boda real de Louis XIV y la princesa española Maria Teresa en 1660. 

5. Biarritz

And why stop there when you have the chic city of the Sud Ouest of France just 17 minutes away? Biarritz, known for its surfing culture, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the best of the French culture. Have a glass of rosé by the beach, enjoy the delicious fresh basque cuisine, and indulge in the many boutiques of renown French and British brands. There are two main beaches, La Grande Plage, lined up with colorful parasols during summer time, right in front of the famous Casino; and a smaller one (which I prefer), Plage du Vieux Port. Regardless of which you go to, the emerald waters of the coast won’t disappoint you. Make sure to admire the famous Hôtel du Palais, a palace built for the Empress Eugenie (wife of Napoleon III), or stay the night there if your wallet allows it!

¿Y por que parar ahí cuando tienen la ciudad mas chic del Sudoeste frances a solo 17 minutos? Biarritz, conocida por su cultura surfista, es el lugar perfecto para disfrutar lo mejor de la cultura francesa. Tomar un copa de rosé al lado de la playa, disfrutar de la delisiosa comida vasca, y darse gustos en uno de los tantos almacenes de marcas francesas y británicas. Hay dos playas principales, La Grande Plage, alineada con sombrillas coloridas durante el verano, justo enfrente del famoso casino; y una mas pequeña (la cual yo prefiero), Plage du Vieux Port. Sin importar a cual vayan, las aguas color esmeralda de la costa no los decepcionará. Asegúrense de admirar el famoso Hôtel du Palais, un palacio construido para la Emperadora Eugenia (esposa de Napoleon III), o pasen la noche aquí si sus billeteras se lo permiten.  

6. Bayonne

You can either cut your trip in Biarritz, or continue to Bayonne which is only an 18 min drive from Biarritz. Although Bayonne is not on the coast, it is still worth visiting, and as close as it is to Biarritz you can just drive there for the day. Either way, you will have to fly out of the airport in Biarritz, which is the one that serves the region. But a trip to the French Basque Country must surely include its capital, even if it’s just for a day trip.  Believe me, its architecture and cobblestone streets wont disappoint you!

Pueden terminar su paseo en Biarritz, o continuar a Bayonne la cual queda a solo 18 minutos en carro desde Biarritz. Aunque Bayonne no queda en la costa, vale la pena visitarla, y ya que están tan cerca de Biarritz podrían ir solo por el día. De igual manera, para regresar a casa tendrán que salir desde el aeropuerto de Biarritz, el cual sirve a toda la region. Pero un paseo al País Vasco Frances debería incluir su capital, aunque sea solo por el día, creanme, ¡su arquitectura y calles empedradas no los decepcionará!
