Medellín, Colombia [City of Everlasting Spring]

Being from Medellín, I thought it was most appropriate for my first post to be about MEDELLIN. I try to travel back to my hometown once a year, and there’s always something new to see and do. The last two times I traveled to Medellín I went with my boyfriend who is French, and it probably took him longer to fall in love with me than with Medellín!

I admit it, I am biased. But I’ve lived in many places and none of them make me feel like Medellín does. You might be thinking that there are cities that are richer, bigger, or with more history, but that’s not what’s important about Medellín. What makes Medellín, Medellín then? it’s PEOPLE. Ask anyone that has been to Colombia, “paisas” (what people from Medellín are called) are unique. They are some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet. Starting with their way of speaking; don’t be thrown back if someone calls you “mi amor” or “cariño”, paisas are very familiar people, and they’ll go out of their way to make you feel at home. If you ask for directions, chances are they’ll take you there themselves.

Medellín is a city surrounded by mountains, that grows from the valley and is becoming every day a bigger player in the Latin American map. In 2013, Medellín was named the most innovative city in the world. The city has had one of the biggest urban turnarounds in the last years, and you’ll be able to witness this your self. From the efficient transportation system the city has, to civic spaces, to libraries, to art galleries, Medellín is thriving and trying to put behind its conflicting past.

Remember, don’t judge a book by its cover. Go to Medellín and experience they city on your own, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Important things to know before traveling to Medellín:

• Medellín is no longer the violent city that has been depicted in movies for years. 
• Medellin doesn’t have “seasons” the temperature remains pretty stable throughout the year, hence, everlasting spring.
• If you travel to Colombia you must dedicate at least 1 week to Medellín, but don’t miss out on the rest of the country. 
• Enjoy the aguardiente or “guaro” (an anise based liquor).
• Leave all your prejudices at home!

Siendo de Medellín, pensé que lo mas apropiado era que comenzará con un entrada sobre MEDELLIN. Intento viajar a mi ciudad una vez al año y siempre hay algo nuevo para hacer o ver. Las dos ultimas veces que he ido a Medellin viajé con mi novio quien es Frances, ¡y probablemente se demoró mas en enamorase de mi que de Medellín! 

Lo admito, soy parcial. Pero he vivido en varios lugares y ninguno me hace sentir como lo hace Medellín. Debes estar pensando que hay ciudades que son mas ricas, mas grandes, con mas historia, pero eso no es lo que enamora de Medellín. ¿Qué hace a Medellín, Medellín?  su GENTE. Pregúntale a cualquier persona que ha ido a Colombia, los “paisas” (como se le llama a la gente de Medellín) son únicos. Son unas de las personas mas acogedoras que jamas conocerás. Empezando con su manera de hablar; no te asustes si alguien te dice “mi amor” o “cariño”, los paisas son gente muy familiar, y harán lo que sea posible para hacerte sentir en casa. Si pides direcciones para ir algún lugar, lo mas seguro es que hasta ellos mismos te lleven.

Medellín es una ciudad rodeada por montañas, una ciudad que crece en un valle y la cual de poquito a poquito se esta convirtiendo en una de las ciudades mas importantes en el mapa latinoamericano. En el 2013 Medellín fue nombrada una de las ciudad mas innovadoras del mundo. La ciudad ha tenido uno de los cambios urbanos mas grandes en los últimos años, y tu mismo puedes confirmar esto por medio del, eficaz medio de transporte publico, espacios cívicos, bibliotecas, y hasta galerías de arte. Medellín esta renaciendo y dejando su pasado conflictivo atrás. 

Recuerda, no juzgues un libro por su portada. Vé a Medellín y vive tu mismo la ciudad, estarás felizmente sorprendido. 

Cosas importantes a saber antes de viajar a Medellín: 

• Medellín ya no es la ciudad violenta que ha sido pintada en las películas por años. 
• Medellín no tiene estaciones, la temperatura se mantiene estable durante todo el año. Es por eso que se le llama “la ciudad de la eterna primavera”.
• Si viajas a Colombia le debes dedicar minimo una semana a Medellín, ¡pero no te olvides del resto del pais!
• Disfruta del aguardiente o “guaro”(un licor a base de anis). 
• ¡Deja todos tus prejuicios en casa!
