Weekend in Bordeaux [Fin de semana en Burdeos]

This past weekend I finally had the opportunity to go to Bordeaux for my first time. The actual reason we went was to see Muse play that Thursday night at a festival, Garo Rock, near Bordeaux in Marmande. Our plan was to rent a house though Airbnb, and sleep close to Marmande the night of the concert; then the following day head to Bordeaux to spend the rest of the weekend there.

Thursday, the day of the concert it was sunny and warm, unfortunately we weren’t so lucky with the rest of the weekend. In Bordeaux we rented a house as well, not too far from the center. To go to the center we used the tram and bought day passes which were not very expensive. That first day we did as the french do, went to have lunch and sat outside in the terrace for…maybe 3 hours or so. You know the usual… some rosé, bread, Côtelettes d’agneau au jus d’ail, french fries, salad, coffee, desert, well…you get the picture (oh and we actually had some sun for lunch). After lunch we did a little bit of shopping since its sales season in France and just walked around the center. We later went to have some coffee and bought some french pastries (Cannelés) to eat at the Jardin Public of Bordeaux. Up to this point I feel like all we had done is eat ! And actually this continued, but first we made a stop at the Miroir d’eau (Water Mirror), one of the cities biggest attractions and presumably the biggest reflecting pool in the world. We then headed to an Italian restaurant for dinner and called it a night at the house with bottle of wine…because when in Bordeaux…!

On Saturday we had two priorities, La Cité du Vin and the Euro Fan Zone to watch the soccer match. On our way to La Cité du Vin we realized that our day pass to use the tram also included the taxi-boats, so of course we took the boat there. La Cité du Vin, which just opened June of this year, is a cultural facility where you get to learn about wine, the history of wine, and wine across the world, as well as experience wine. The bold architectural design of the building adds to this whole wine experience. This is a MUST stop if you’re visiting Bordeaux. After enjoying some wine we headed to the Euro Fan Zone at the Place des Quinconces, the biggest Fan Zone after Paris. The match was Germany vs. Italy, and the match was in bordeaux that night. I hope one day I can go to an actual match, but for now I settle with the Fan Zone, which had a very cool and unique ambiance.

If you come visit France, you should definitely consider Bordeaux. Not only for what’s obvious, Bordeaux wine, but the city itself has a special charm. Bordeaux is the 5th largest city in France and with all the efforts to recover abandoned buildings and give the city a sort of face lift it will only keep attracting more residents and tourist. You can’t beat history, culture, and good wine. The only thing missing from my trip was a visit to the wineries, but hey… thats one more excuse to go back soon!

Este pasado fin de semana por fin tuve la oportunidad de ir a Burdeos por primera vez. En realidad la razón por la cual fuimos, era para ver a Muse tocar el jueves en la noche en el festival, Garo Rock. El cual toma lugar cada año en la pequeña ciudad de Marmande, cerca a Burdeos. Nuestro plan era alquilar una casa por medio de Airbnb y dormir cerca a Marmande esa noche, y al día siguiente viajar a Burdeos para pasar el fin de semana allá.

El día del concierto, el jueves, tuvimos un día caluroso y con mucho sol, desafortunadamente no tuvimos tanta suerte el resto del fin de semana. En Burdeos también alquilamos una casa no muy lejos del centro de la ciudad. Para ir al centro usamos el tranvía y compramos un pase por el día el cual fue bastante económico. El primer día en Burdeos hicimos como los franceses, fuimos a almorzar y nos sentamos afuera en la terraza, mas o menos…unas 3 horas. Comimos lo normal…vino rosé, pan, Côtelettes d’agneau au jus d’ail, papitas fritas, ensalada, cafe, postre, bueno…creo que entienden (Ah y por suerte salió el sol mientras almorzábamos). Después del almuerzo caminamos por el centro y entramos a algunos almacenes ya que en Francia es época de promociones. Mas tarde fuimos a tomarnos un cafecito y compramos algunos pasteles franceses (Cannelés) para comérnoslos en el Jardin Public de Burdeos. ¡Siento que lo único que hicimos fue comer! y de hecho continuamos comiendo, pero antes hicimos una parada en el Miroir d’eau (Espejo de Agua), una de las atracciones mas grandes de la ciudad y presumiblemente el espejo de agua mas grande del mundo. Luego continuamos a un restaurante italiano para cenar y terminamos la noche en la casa con una botella de vino…¡porque pues estábamos en Burdeos!

El sábado teníamos dos prioridades, La Cité du Vin y la Zona de Fanáticos de la Eurocopa para ver el partido de futbol. En camino a La Cité du Vin nos dimos cuenta que el pase de transporte que habíamos comprando por el día incluía los barco-taxis, así que tomamos uno para llegar allá. La Cité du Vin, la cual acaba de abrir en junio de este año, es una instalación cultural donde puedes aprender sobre el vino, la historia del vino, y el vino al rededor del mundo, al mismo tiempo que disfrutar del propio vino. El audaz diseño arquitectónico del edifico le agrega un gran valor a esta linda experiencia con el vino. Esta es una parada MANDATORIA si visitas Burdeos. Después de disfrutar del vino nos dirigimos a la Zona de Fanáticos de la Eurocopa en La Place des Quinconces, la Zona de Fanáticos mas grande después de la de Paris. El partido era Alemania contra Italia, y justo tomaba lugar en Burdeos esa noche. Me encantaría algún día poder ir a un partido de la Eurocopa, pero por ahora me conformo con la Zona de Fanáticos, donde había un ambiente realmente único.

Si vienen a visitar Francia les aconsejo considerar ir a Burdeos. No solamente por lo obvio, el vino, pero la ciudad en si tiene un encanto especial. Burdeos es la quinta ciudad mas grande Francia y con todos los esfuerzos para recuperar los edifico abandonos y darle una nueva cara a la ciudad, solo seguirá atrayendo a mas residentes y turistas. Aparte que no hay nada mejor que cultura, historia, y vino en un mismo lugar. Lo único que me falto en este paseo fue la ida a las bodegas y viñedos, pero bueno…¡esa es una excusa mas para regresar!
